Passengers from a hantavirus-affected cruise ship will isolate in Wirral as health authorities manage the outbreak's impact.

British passengers and crew from a cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak will be quarantined at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, Merseyside. This facility previously served as a quarantine site during the Covid-19 pandemic. The MV Hondius is expected to arrive in the Canary Islands this weekend, where the remaining 22 British passengers will be repatriated via a charter flight shortly after their disembarkation.

Five confirmed cases of hantavirus have been reported among passengers, including one individual among the three who have died during their voyage on the Dutch vessel. Two British men are currently receiving medical care in the Netherlands and South Africa, while another Briton is suspected of having the virus and is being treated on the remote island of Tristan da Cunha, a stop for the ship in mid-April.

In a joint statement, various local authorities—including NHS England North West, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board, Merseyside Police, North West Ambulance Service, and Wirral Council—announced their coordinated efforts with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to assist in the repatriation process.

The statement explained that upon arrival, the individuals would undergo clinical assessments and testing in a controlled environment. "We expect this initial stay to be up to 72 hours. Following this, public health specialists will assess whether they can isolate at home or another location," it read.

The statement emphasised that the overall risk to the general public remains very low. Authorities also expressed their gratitude to the healthcare workers and local government partners for their efficient handling of the situation.

While the World Health Organization (WHO) labelled the outbreak a "serious incident," it reassured the public that the risk remains low and suggested this scenario differs significantly from the Covid-19 pandemic. As of Saturday, there were reportedly no symptomatic passengers aboard the ship.

Janelle Holmes, chief executive of Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, informed her staff about hosting the returning passengers, acknowledging the organisation's prior experience with repatriation during the early days of Covid-19.

Holmes stated that upon their arrival at the hospital, guests would be screened for symptoms. Any individual exhibiting symptoms would not be transferred to the site, and symptomatic cases post-arrival would be directed to another facility promptly.

The source of the hantavirus outbreak remains undetermined. Hantavirus commonly originates from rodents such as mice and rats, yet experts suggest that in this situation, person-to-person transmission may also have occurred among closely associated individuals. Symptoms may manifest two to four weeks after exposure and can include fever, severe fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.

The UKHSA noted that the virus is not transmitted through casual contact, such as public spaces, and any rare transmissions among individuals typically involve prolonged close contact.

Some residents on Tenerife, where the MV Hondius will be docking, have expressed concerns regarding potential health implications. The WHO reiterated that the spread of hantavirus is fundamentally different from Covid-19, calming apprehensions in the local community.

As of now, a British man is among the three evacuees taken to the Netherlands after developing symptoms while onboard the MV Hondius. Reports from Spanish news outlet El Mundo indicated that the vessel encountered an incident, falling from a height of 10 metres near San Sebastián de La Gomera.
