Israeli Airstrike in South Lebanon Leaves One Dead and Twelve Injured

An Israeli military strike in southern Lebanon has resulted in the death of one individual, as reported by the Lebanese health ministry. The strike occurred in the town of Tibnin when the roof of a prayer hall at a cemetery was hit, leading to injuries for 12 others. This escalation follows claims from the Israeli military of a 'blatant violation of the ceasefire' by the Iran-backed group, Hezbollah.

Further strikes were reported in the nearby town of Mansouri, where the Israeli military issued its first evacuation order in over a month. Hezbollah has not publicly commented on the recent developments. This situation unfolds as officials from Israel and Lebanon engage in US-sponsored negotiations in Rome, aimed at reinforcing the ceasefire established in late June.

The trilateral framework agreed upon included provisions for the Israeli military's gradual withdrawal from occupied territories in southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah. However, the Lebanese group has rejected the terms, stating that linking the withdrawal to disarmament crossed 'all red lines.'

The Israeli military confirmed that the strikes began shortly after a warning was issued for residents of Mansouri to evacuate, citing military activities in the designated 'security zone,' a ten-kilometre strip of territory claimed by Israel along the border.

According to an Israeli military source, the Lebanese army has established a checkpoint in the area, which was described as a violation of the agreed terms. The evacuation order marked the first such instance since 14 June, when multiple towns and villages were evacuated.

Local authorities noted that previous strikes had caused significant damage in Mansouri, prompting families to flee toward Tyre, the largest city in southern Lebanon. Reports suggest that around 120 families had returned to Mansouri post-ceasefire, although numbers have since diminished as Israeli strikes have intensified.

The United Nations reported that over 820,000 displaced persons in Lebanon due to the ongoing conflict have started returning home, but approximately 360,000 remain unable to do so, with some living in government shelters.

The conflict escalated on 2 March when Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel in retaliation for an attack that resulted in the death of Iran's supreme leader. Since then, civilian casualties have mounted, with the Lebanese health ministry estimating at least 4,333 fatalities, among them women and children. Israeli casualties are reported differently, with authorities citing the deaths of 38 soldiers and four civilians amid the ongoing hostilities.

Yonatan Netanyahu, an Israeli soldier, was confirmed deceased during a mission aimed at freeing hostages. Meanwhile, recent reports indicate heightened planning for airstrikes against Iran by Israel and the United States, amid increasing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank as settlements expand.

The future of the ceasefire remains uncertain as both sides continue to grapple with complex regional dynamics and the persistent threat of renewed conflict.
