Israeli Airstrike Kills Senior Hamas Commander in Gaza City

Izz al-Din al-Beik, the leader of Hamas's military wing in northern Gaza, has been confirmed dead following an Israeli airstrike on an apartment building in Gaza City. The incident took place in the Nassr neighbourhood during the early hours of Tuesday. Both Palestinian and Israeli officials have reported the incident, with Hamas issuing a statement acknowledging the loss of its commander.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz released a joint statement on social media platform X, confirming that the military successfully targeted al-Beik in this operation. Al-Shifa Hospital later reported that another individual succumbed to injuries sustained during the airstrike.

Izz al-Din al-Beik succeeded Ahmed al-Ghandour as the commander of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza amid escalating violence in the region. This airstrike is part of a broader Israeli offensive that has intensified in recent weeks, aimed at Hamas following their previous actions.

Israeli military sources assert that during September alone, they have killed at least 20 members of Hamas, including various senior figures believed to be involved in the broader conflict, such as those linked to an attack on southern Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023.

However, tensions remain high. Hamas has accused Israel of breaching a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States, which was initially intended to lead to the reconstruction of Gaza. Yet, progress on this front has been stalled as both sides have failed to agree on disarmament terms for Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the conflict has led to the deaths of over 1,400 Palestinians since the ceasefire took effect. Additionally, the Israeli military has reported the loss of four soldiers during this period, highlighting the continuing violence. Palestinian authorities estimate that more than 74,000 people have been killed since the resurgence of conflict began in October 2023.
