Israel and Lebanon Advance in Talks for Southern Lebanon Pilot Zones
New negotiations in Rome signal progress toward establishing pilot zones in southern Lebanon, involving Israeli withdrawal and Lebanese military deployment.

Negotiations between Israel and Lebanon concluded recently in Rome, marking a significant step towards initiating a pilot project that would transfer control of several areas in southern Lebanon from the Israeli military to the Lebanese Armed Forces. This development highlights ongoing efforts to stabilise the region following months of discussions.

The latest round of talks, which took place on July 15, 2026, involved delegations representing both nations and was facilitated by United States mediation. This sixth round followed a prior meeting in Washington on June 26, during which a framework agreement was established.

Italian media reported that the discussions in Rome focused on establishing a mechanism for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the first two designated 'pilot zones'. Both sides reportedly clarified the conditions and sequence for this withdrawal, as well as for the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, the disarmament of the militant group Hezbollah, and measures to ensure effective control by the Lebanese state over the areas in question.

Negotiators agreed to continue their discussions at a later date, but specifics regarding the timing of future talks have not been confirmed. This ongoing dialogue reflects a broader effort to reach a ceasefire framework and enhance stability in the region.

The decision to hold discussions in Rome underscores the international interest in facilitating peace between the two nations, with the involvement of the US playing a crucial role in this delicate process. Italian news agency Agenzia Nova provided insights into the negotiations, indicating that the atmosphere was constructive and progress has been made towards a resolution.

As both countries work towards implementing the terms of the agreement made in Washington, the potential establishment of pilot zones could serve as a critical step in enhancing security and governance in southern Lebanon. Observers are optimistic that further dialogue may lead to a comprehensive resolution to longstanding tensions in the area.
