Activist Sonam Wangchuk Enters 18th Day of Hunger Strike in Delhi
Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk is on day 18 of his hunger strike, demanding accountability in India's education sector and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent educational activist and advocate for sustainable innovation, has reached the 18th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. His protest is directed against Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, following significant issues regarding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Under Graduation (NEET-UG) 2026 paper leak.

Wangchuk, now a leading figure in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, has been vocally demanding Pradhan's resignation due to what he perceives as a failure of accountability in the education system. The tensions between Wangchuk and Pradhan are particularly notable given their previously amicable relationship. In March 2023, the two met to discuss the National Education Policy (NEP), with both expressing optimism about educational reforms in India. However, events have dramatically unfolded since then.

An alarming situation arose in May when over 22 lakh students sat for the NEET-UG examination, which was later cancelled amid allegations of leaked question papers. A nationwide retest occurred on June 21, but the fallout included a series of tragic student suicides attributed to the pressures of examination stress and educational failures.

The controversy escalated further after remarks made by the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, who described unemployed youth in derogatory terms, leading to widespread outrage online. This backlash catalysed the formation of the CJP, with young protesters donning cockroach masks demanding accountability and Pradhan's resignation. Wangchuk has been at the forefront of these protests, emphasising the necessity for structural changes in India’s education policy.

During his extended fast, Wangchuk has limited public appearances, but on the recent 18th day, he spoke to fellow demonstrators, stating, "Our fasting may not immediately bring resignations. But if it awakens people, then it has served its purpose." He highlighted that while individual leadership changes might be minor, a collective awakening among citizens is crucial for comprehensive reform.

As the protest continues, many have rallied to support Wangchuk's cause, advocating for transparency and effective governance in educational matters. The stark shift from collaboration in educational discussions to a public confrontation underscores the complexity and urgency surrounding India's education policy and the challenges it faces.
