Israel Criticises Macron's Remarks on West Bank and Hamas

Israel has expressed strong condemnation of remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron during his speech at the United Nations. Macron characterised the humanitarian situation in Gaza as dire and stated that Hamas is not active in the West Bank, which ignited a sharp response from Israeli officials.

A spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Macron's comments as 'grotesque absurdity.' This statement underscored a growing tension between Israel and France, particularly regarding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Netanyahu's office highlighted that numerous attacks from Hamas occur daily against Israeli citizens, including a recent incident where an Israeli settler was killed in the West Bank.

The slain settler, Netanel Shukrun, who was a father of six and held French citizenship, was shot dead shortly before Yom Kippur, one of Judaism's most sacred observances. The Israeli military has since apprehended the suspect and conducted operations in the attacker's village.

In response to the issues raised by Macron, Netanyahu is set to deliver a speech to the UN, aiming to challenge the narrative surrounding Israeli actions and broader regional security. Notably, Macron's remarks referenced the importance of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza and called out daily violations occurring in the West Bank. He remarked, 'What is our credibility worth if we remain inactive on Gaza? Some claim that peace has been achieved, but this has not opened up humanitarian deliveries.'
