In Los Angeles, Iran's Team Melli draws crowds of supporters amid political tensions. Football serves as a unifying force for fans.

In a significant display of unity, Iranian football fans gathered in Los Angeles to support their national team, known as Team Melli, during their World Cup fixture against New Zealand. The match, which ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw, saw a large turnout of supporters, many of whom expressed their dissent against the Iranian regime while passionately cheering for their team.

Fan Parsa Tafreshi, who travelled from New York for the event, expressed optimism about the crowd's reaction, stating, "I’m sure when we score a goal today, everyone will be cheering." His prediction proved accurate as celebrations broke out each time Iran scored.

The stadium hosted two distinct sets of supporters, reflecting a divided opinion among the Iranian diaspora. Some fans waved the Islamic Republic flag, while others displayed the pre-revolution flag, featuring a lion and sun, a symbol associated with the Iranian opposition. Despite the mixed display, fans united in their chants for Team Melli, creating an electrifying atmosphere throughout the match.

Concerns of unrest surrounding the event were unfounded, with the majority of the crowd being Iranian and far outnumbering the New Zealand supporters. The game proceeded without significant incident, although a small demonstration occurred outside the venue. A group of protesters carried Israeli flags and rallied in support of opposition figure Reza Pahlavi, urging U.S. President Donald Trump to act against the Tehran regime.

One protester, Kourosh Kiumarsi, condemned the Iranian squad as the "regime team" and claimed, "Israel and the USA attacked the regime and helped the people of Iran. They are not at war with Iran. They are at war with the Islamic Republic regime." Despite the protest's intensity, it remained small and contained, allowing the focus to remain on the match inside the stadium.

Sudi Farokhnia, another fan, remarked on the atmosphere, noting, "I love that all the hype was just outside of the stadium. Once you walked into the stadium, all you could hear was Iran, Iran, Iran." This sentiment echoed throughout the crowd as everyone cheered for Team Melli.

While the event served as a platform for political expression, the match itself remained the centrepiece. FIFA's regulations prohibit political symbols at international games, yet many fans managed to enter the stadium displaying the lion-and-sun flag alongside various political slogans such as "Make Iran Great Again" and "free Iran." FIFA has not commented on the matter.

Several fans also expressed their desire for remembrance of victims of conflict. One supporter, identified only as Arash, wore a shirt featuring the phrase "Minab 168," commemorating lives lost during the US-Israel war on Iran, particularly highlighting the tragedy of children killed at a school in the southern city of Minab.

He asserted, "This is not just to send a political message... School is a place of virtue. It’s a place of learning. It should be off limits to conflict."

Inside the stadium, the emotional responses included jeering the Iranian national anthem, perceived by many as representing the government. Team Melli's participation in the tournament faced obstacles earlier in the year, as their base was moved to Mexico due to political implications but ultimately, the focus shifted back to the match on the day of the game.

During play, the excitement continued as Team Melli had to overcome two deficits to secure a thrilling draw. The match not only offered a moment of joy to fans but also captured the complexities surrounding Iranian identity and autonomy amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. While a small group protested outside, the majority of Iranian supporters found joy in their shared love for football, celebrating their team despite the country's challenges.
