Iran warns it will strike energy sites if US attacks occur, escalating tensions in the Middle East after Trump issues threats over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has escalated its rhetoric, stating it will target critical infrastructure across the Middle East if the United States conducts attacks on its energy sites. This declaration comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe consequences.

In a statement delivered on Sunday, Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that energy and oil sites throughout the region would be considered 'legitimate targets' should Iran's own energy facilities come under assault. This warning coincided with missile strikes that hit two southern Israeli cities overnight, injuring dozens and damaging residential buildings, emphasising the potential for further escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Following a US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, Trump threatened to 'obliterate' Iran’s power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened within 48 hours, intensifying fears in global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway, facilitating the passage of approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas. Iran maintains that the strait remains open to shipping, albeit with restrictions on vessels linked to its adversaries.

Iran's military has reiterated its commitment to respond intensively to any attacks on its energy infrastructure, stating that not only would Iranian facilities be targeted but so too would US and Israeli infrastructures, specifically naming energy, information technology, and desalination facilities.

The situation has grown increasingly dire, with reports indicating over 2,000 fatalities since the onset of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which began on 28 February. Meanwhile, Iranian missile strikes have targeted Israeli cities, including Dimona and Arad, alarming Israeli officials who noted that these attacks breached their air defence systems for the first time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to retaliate directly against Iranian leaders, calling for action against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Reports suggest that approximately 200 people were injured during these missile attacks, with some casualties reported among children.

As tensions continue to rise, the World Health Organization has expressed grave concerns over the ongoing hostilities, describing the war as reaching a 'perilous stage'. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that attacks on nuclear sites pose significant risks to public health and environmental safety.

Additional developments include Iranian long-range missile tests, which reportedly targeted a US-British military facility in the Indian Ocean. The missiles have a potential range that could reach major European cities, raising alarms about their capability and intentions.

In the meantime, military actions have extended beyond Iran and Israel, with both sides escalating their operations in the region. Recent clashes have also involved Iranian-backed Hezbollah and have expanded the scope of the conflict, drawing in additional nations and contributing to regional instability.

As this complex situation evolves, analysts suggest that Trump's threats have raised tensions significantly, leading to uncertainty in global markets, particularly within the energy sector, as investors brace for potential repercussions.
