Iran Reviews US Peace Proposal Amid Ongoing Regional Conflicts
Tehran is set to respond to a US proposal aimed at ending conflict as international tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian government is poised to respond to a 14-point proposal from the United States, intended to negotiate an end to ongoing hostilities in the region. This response is expected to be communicated today to mediators from Pakistan.

The proposal comes amidst heightened tensions, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil transportation. In this context, an array of Gulf nations, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, are collaborating with US officials to formulate a new resolution to be presented to the United Nations Security Council.

The resolution calls upon Iran to cease its attacks on merchant vessels and to disclose the locations of any sea mines placed in the Strait of Hormuz. A US representative at the UN has indicated that this draft resolution is a refinement of previous efforts that were blocked by permanent council members, Russia and China.

The US envoy to the UN, Mike Waltz, has stated that Iran’s actions in the Strait represent a violation of international maritime law, condemning Tehran's establishment of a Persian Gulf Straits Authority, which aims to impose tolls on ships navigating through these critical waters. Waltz described Iran's tactics as 'collective punishment' that is both immoral and illegal under international law.

In support of this initiative, Qatar's Ambassador to the UN, Alya Ahmed Saif al-Thani, described the situation as a significant threat not only to regional stability but to global economic security as well. She emphasised the shared responsibility of the international community to maintain peace and security in maritime navigation.

Further complicating the situation is the ongoing military conflict involving Israeli forces, which has recently intensified attacks in southern Lebanon, disrupting efforts to maintain a ceasefire established through US mediation.

As analysts refer to deep-seated animosity between the US and Iran, there is speculation regarding possible diplomatic resolutions moving forward. Samir Puri, a visiting lecturer at King’s College London, articulated that both countries exhibit a 'mutual desperation' to prevail in negotiations, emphasising the necessity of finding common ground, particularly concerning Iran's nuclear programme and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Failure to arrive at a peaceful resolution could prolong the conflict, with the potential for escalation looming over the region. Negotiators are under pressure to address these crucial issues, as the stability of the Strait of Hormuz is essential for the free flow of goods and energy resources worldwide.
