China Sentences Two Former Defence Ministers for Corruption
Two former Ministers of Defence in China, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, have been sentenced to suspended death penalties following corruption charges, as reported by state media. The military court announced the sentences on Thursday, indicating a two-year reprieve, after which the death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or reduction.
Both officials were convicted of bribery, leading to the confiscation of their personal assets. The sentencing occurs within the context of a wider anti-corruption campaign that has seen numerous military officials ousted in recent months. Wei Fenghe served as defence minister from 2018 until his replacement by Li in March 2023. Li’s time as minister was brief, ending with his dismissal in October 2023 after a period of absence from public engagements, which led to speculation regarding his status.
Reports from the Reuters news agency, referencing the official Xinhua news agency, reveal that Li was accused of receiving substantial bribes alongside engaging in bribery himself. An investigation suggested that he failed to meet his political responsibilities and sought personal gain.
Similarly, Wei Fenghe faced allegations of accepting significant sums of money and other valuables as bribes. The investigations reportedly uncovered that he also facilitated improper benefits in personnel decisions.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has publicly addressed the military's anti-corruption measures, showcasing a commitment to eradicate graft since ascending to power, though critics claim that these actions serve to eliminate political adversaries. In February of this year, Xi was quoted stating the military had undergone 'revolutionary tempering in the fight against corruption.'
The ongoing anti-corruption drive has resulted in the punishment of over a million officials, including a number of high-ranking generals. This campaign has garnered significant attention, underlining an ongoing effort to tighten control over the military and governmental apparatus within China.
