Iran Prepares for Burial of Slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei
Iran is set to honour its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with a burial in his hometown of Mashhad after an extensive week of public mourning. Following a series of mass funeral processions across the country, Khamenei's body is scheduled to be interred at a ceremony on Thursday.
Tens of thousands of mourners have gathered in Mashhad, a city known for its significant religious site, the Shrine of Imam Reza. The public mourning follows a series of events across Iran and in neighbouring Iraq, where Iranian officials reported over 2.3 million people attended Khamenei's funeral procession in the holy city of Najaf.
Khamenei's death occurred during an escalation of hostilities, marked by attacks from the United States and Israel targeting Iran, which began on February 28. The strikes resulted in the deaths of Khamenei and several family members. While a temporary pause in US attacks on Iran had been announced, the situation remains volatile, with recent exchanges of fire reported between the two nations.
Recent footage from the official news agency, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), depicted Khamenei's remains being transported aboard a truck through crowded streets, flanked by clerics and surrounded by mourners carrying flags and posters bearing the late leader's image. The emotional atmosphere was underscored by chants demanding retribution against US President Donald Trump, with slogans expressing vengeance for Khamenei's assassination.
Reports indicate that crowds in Mashhad included individuals chanting in solidarity, expressing anger towards external adversaries and upholding national pride. The procession in Tehran also saw substantial attendance, with officials claiming it may have been the largest public gathering witnessed in modern Iranian history.
The incumbent supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been absent during the public mourning events. He reportedly sustained injuries during the strikes that claimed his father's life, though specifics regarding his health and injury severity have not been fully disclosed. The burial ceremony is planned for 2:30 PM local time, with initial delays in the event attributed to larger crowds expected to attend than had been earlier anticipated.
Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, the head of Khamenei's office, stated that the late leader had expressed a wish to be buried in Mashhad, near the revered shrine of Imam Reza, who is regarded as a key figure in Shia Islam and a significant descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. Despite the global tension following these attacks, Iran’s funeral observances have aimed to showcase national unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
