Iran Maintains Stance on Strait of Hormuz Conditions Amid Regional Tensions

Iran has reiterated its firm conditions regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that the United States must comply with its demands before access to the vital waterway is restored. The declaration coincided with a visit by Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan's interior minister, to Tehran amid escalating hostilities between the US, Israel, and Iran. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, communicated to Cong Peiwu, the Chinese ambassador, that the US must cease its military activities and release Iranian funds held abroad for the strait to be reopened.

'As long as the US does not change its behaviour and accept Iran’s conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened,' Rezaei stated, as reported by Iranian media. He further insisted on an end to the US’s naval blockade of Iranian ports and a region-wide ceasefire that includes conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.

In a recent interview, US President Donald Trump has wavered between escalating tensions and suggesting a potential peace agreement, indicating uncertainty over the future of US-Iran relations. 'I’m sort of negotiating,' Trump noted in an interview, while also hinting at the possibility of either permitting Iran to fail economically or increasing military pressure.

During Naqvi’s visit, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed strengthening political, economic, trade, cultural, and security ties between Iran and Pakistan. This diplomatic engagement occurs as Islamabad mediates efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts in the region.

Earlier statements from Qatar indicated advanced discussions between Iran and Oman regarding shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. Majed al-Ansari, spokesman for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, remarked on optimistic statements from both capitals concerning the reopening of the strait and maintenance of a ceasefire.

Despite these discussions, Iran maintains that agreements with Oman regarding shipping routes do not affect its conditions for the strait’s reopening. Alan Eyre, a former US diplomat, stated that Iran's strategy of keeping the strait closed is aimed at exerting added pressure on the US.

In related incidents, the US Navy has reported that a helicopter fired missiles at a Panama-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman for allegedly violating a US blockade on Iranian ports. Simultaneously, a suspected Houthi attack in the Bab al-Mandeb strait resulted in the deaths of four crew members from a cargo vessel.

Casualties continue to mount in the ongoing conflict, with Iranian fatalities exceeding 3,500 and more than 27,000 injured since the commencement of hostilities. Additionally, the Lebanese Health Ministry has reported over 4,300 deaths in Lebanon due to the conflict, further escalating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
