Iran Issues Deadline to US Amid Rising Tensions Over Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, has communicated a five-day ultimatum to the United States, imposing conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway has emerged as a critical flashpoint in ongoing tensions between the two nations, with its closure significantly impacting the global economy.

Jorge Moreira Da Silva, Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), has been recently appointed to lead a UN task force aimed at addressing the humanitarian implications of the Strait's closure. Moreira emphasised the importance of political will to alleviate the current crisis in this vital shipping route.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, has publicly condemned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for what he described as “reframing a threat to annihilate Iran.” In a statement on the social media platform X, Baghaei stated, "Mark Carney must understand that time is too ruthless to let the shelter of illusion and hypocrisy endure forever."

He further remarked that those who have aligned with American influence would ultimately recognise that abandoning their dignity would not lead to salvation. Baghaei conveyed that their nation had emerged as a steadfast protector against foreign aggression.

In a related development, new US sanctions have complicated travel for Iranian citizens, prompting airlines and surrounding nations to suspend services to Iranian carriers. The conclusion of a temporary wind-down period has resulted in the termination of numerous flights to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and China. Neighbouring countries such as Oman, Azerbaijan, and Georgia have ceased providing necessary airspace and airport services, leading to increased congestion at Iran’s land borders.

Aviation expert Mohammadreza Ebrahimpour labelled this coordinated response as “a new level of sanctions in action,” predicting it may carry longer-term consequences than previous restrictions that have already incurred over $300 million in losses annually for Iran.

United States President Donald Trump, on the first day of the United Nations General Assembly, issued a stark warning to Iran, stating he was prepared to “annihilate” the country. Later, he described discussions with Iranian leaders as having gone “very well.” Iran’s military responded to Trump's rhetoric with assurance of readiness for a robust response to any aggression.

The Iranian Armed Forces General Staff reiterated their preparedness for a greater retaliation, while Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei marked the beginning of the academic year with a statement about the power of knowledge and faith against adversaries.

In the backdrop of these escalating tensions, both sides have engaged in diplomatic talks at the UN General Assembly, reviving a near-collapsed dialogue pathway that followed months of violations of earlier agreements.

In other geopolitical developments, US Senator Ruben Gallego announced his leadership on legislation intended to impose sanctions against firms involved in constructing Israeli settlements in the E1 region of the West Bank, stressing that the United States remains committed to a two-state solution as the pathway to enduring peace.

Meanwhile, the Yemeni government reported successful thwarting of Houthi attacks aimed at crucial transportation routes connecting southern provinces. Clashes reportedly resulted in heavy losses for the attackers, affirming the Yemeni armed forces’ capability in the ongoing conflict.

Oil prices saw a slight decline subsequent to an earlier surge, with Brent crude futures dipping by 0.9% to $102.13 a barrel. This followed recent developments where Iran indicated its openness to diplomatic solutions to the ongoing conflict, despite significant ongoing barriers to resolution.
