Iran Faces Major Protests Amid Currency Crisis and Rising Prices
Protests erupt across Iran as currency plummets, with shopkeepers joining in. Calls for government dialogue surface amid public unrest.

Protests have erupted across Iran, marking the largest demonstrations since 2022, as citizens express frustration over the country's economic difficulties. The protests were ignited by the Iranian rial's historic decline against the US dollar, causing significant inflation and increased costs of living.

Demonstrations have taken place in multiple cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Mashhad. In Tehran, law enforcement used tear gas to disperse crowds, which showed the growing tension between protesters and authorities. The unrest has prompted a number of shopkeepers to close their businesses in solidarity with the demonstrators.

The Iranian Central Bank chief, Mohammad Reza Farzin, resigned in response to the escalating situation, reflecting the government's struggle to manage the economic crisis. According to the semi-official ILNA news agency, many business owners have ceased operations, while others have remained open despite calls for a general strike among merchants.

In a statement addressing the unrest, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged the government to engage in dialogue with protesters and to heed their “legitimate demands.” He instructed the interior minister to facilitate discussions with representatives of the demonstrators to find solutions to the growing problems.

The current protests stem from the rapid depreciation of the rial, which recently reached 1.42 million rials to the dollar, a steep drop from 32,000 rials to the dollar during the 2015 nuclear agreement that lifted sanctions on Iran. The currency's decline has intensified inflation, particularly affecting the prices of food and essential goods.

Adding to the public's concerns, reports have emerged suggesting that the Iranian government plans to increase taxes coinciding with the start of the Iranian New Year on March 21. Such measures are expected to exacerbate the already strained economic situation for many households.

The context of these protests echoes historical sentiments, as merchants played a pivotal role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which resulted in the establishment of the current Islamic Republic. The current unrest highlights ongoing discontent with economic conditions and governance in Iran, mirroring sentiments from previous decades.

As the situation unfolds, observers will be watching closely to see how the Iranian government responds to the public's calls for change and the potential impact on the region's stability.
