Iran Dismisses Potential Meeting Between Supreme Leader and Trump
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed the possibility of a meeting between Iran's supreme leader and U.S. President Donald Trump, following Trump's recent suggestion. On June 3, 2026, Trump expressed to the New York Post that he would like to meet the Iranian leader, stating, "we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out". However, in a response aired by Lebanese media, Araghchi downplayed the chances of such a meeting, calling it unrealistic.
In another development on June 5, the Iranian military reported that it had fired warning shots at two U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Oman, asserting that the actions were in response to alleged harassment by the U.S. Navy. Iranian state media claimed that the warships departed the region afterward. The U.S. Central Command, however, refuted these claims, insisting that no such engagement took place and that it would have violated an existing ceasefire between the two nations.
On June 4, 2026, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, rejected a conditional truce proposed by Lebanese and Israeli representatives, demanding a complete ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal instead. He warned of potential attacks on northern Israel should their demands not be met.
The international community was also made aware of rising tensions earlier in the week when India condemned an attack on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which resulted in the death of a Serbian peacekeeper. This incident is part of the ongoing hostilities in the region. The peacekeeper died after mortar fire targeted his position in southeast Lebanon; two other peacekeepers were injured in the attack.
In light of the ongoing turmoil, Iranian adviser Mohsen Rezaei mentioned in a CNN report that any agreement with the U.S. would hinge upon the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets.
Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the situation, signalling that Russia aims for balanced and stable oil prices amid conflict arising from U.S. actions against Iran. He noted concerns over the reduction in oil supplies affecting the global market.
Iran’s stance regarding potential U.S. negotiations remains cautious and filled with reservations, as the country navigates a complex web of military and diplomatic challenges in the region. All parties continue to monitor the developments closely, given the gravity of the ongoing crisis.
