Iran-Backed Houthis Claim Downing of Saudi F-15 Jet in Yemen

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed to have downed a Saudi F-15 fighter jet in Marib province, a region central to the ongoing conflict in Yemen. The Houthi Military Media released a video that reportedly depicts the aftermath of the incident, showing their fighters inspecting wreckage in a desert area. The footage opens with an animation suggesting a missile strike on what looks to be a fighter aircraft, followed by scenes of Houthi personnel.

According to a statement attributed to the Houthis, the F-15, which is manufactured in the United States, was brought down using a 'locally manufactured surface-to-air missile' while it was conducting operations deemed hostile. While the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified, if confirmed, this incident would mark just the second known instance of a US-made F-15 being shot down in conflict. Earlier this year, an F-15 Strike Eagle operated by the US Air Force was downed by Iranian forces in another theatre of conflict.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree reiterated this claim, stating that the Saudi aircraft was shot down over the Marib governorate. Saudi officials have yet to confirm or deny the incident, leaving the situation uncertain.

The Houthis have intensified their operations against Saudi Arabia recently. In a significant development, they announced control over Yemen's entire Red Sea coastline and captured three strategic islands in a rapid military campaign, consolidating their influence over critical shipping routes linking Europe and Asia. On Thursday, Saudi defence forces reported a tragic incident involving the debris from an intercepted Houthi drone, which resulted in one death and injuries to two others. The victims were identified as a Yemeni national who was killed, while a Saudi citizen and a Pakistani national sustained injuries in Taif province, according to the Associated Press, which cited local officials.
