Interest in Electric Two-Wheelers Grows Among Indian Buyers
A recent study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) indicates that a significant portion of Indian consumers are shifting their preferences towards electric two-wheelers. Approximately 43% of prospective buyers are contemplating electric vehicle options, reflecting a substantial rise from previous figures. The report highlights that the outright dismissal of electric vehicles has notably declined, falling from 38% to 29% in the same period.
Electric two-wheelers now represent 9.9% of total sales, a marked increase from 5.5% two years ago. This growth indicates a trend towards acceptance as consumer ratings improve.
Market Concentration Despite the increase in consumer choice, the electric two-wheeler market in India remains dominated by a select few brands. According to the findings, five manufacturers now account for roughly 83% of total sales. The report reveals that there has been a nearly 30% rise in the number of available models since 2023; however, the concentration among leading brands persists.
Notably, data from September 2026, as released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), shows that TVS Motor topped sales with over 54,000 units sold. Other key players included Bajaj Auto and Ather Energy, underscoring the challenges for smaller brands trying to compete against established names.
Consumer Concerns While general acceptance of electric vehicles is increasing, key concerns linger regarding the durability of these vehicles and their capacity to handle rough terrains. The report advises manufacturers to address diverse consumer expectations around affordability, performance, and long-term durability.
BCG also emphasises that as electric two-wheelers transition into the mainstream, the nature of consumer expectations is evolving. Research conducted identified ten distinct consumer groups, each with varied needs regarding the vehicles they wish to purchase.
Future Considerations In light of these findings, the report suggests that electric two-wheeler manufacturers enhance their product development strategies to cater to specific consumer requirements rather than relying solely on price competitiveness. Strategies like modular platforms and comprehensive service packages, including extended warranties and insurance, will be crucial for brands aiming to solidify their presence in this growing market.
In conclusion, while the Indian electric two-wheeler market is gaining momentum, ongoing challenges concerning consumer perceptions and market concentration remain. As the sector evolves, understanding customer preferences will be critical for manufacturers wishing to thrive in this competitive landscape.
