IndiGo Increases Infant Travel Fee and Add-on Service Charges

India's largest airline, IndiGo, has implemented significant increases in its fees for infant travel and several add-on services, effective from September. The infant travel fee for children under the age of two has risen from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. This adjustment is expected to impact approximately 1 million infant passengers annually, potentially generating an additional ₹90 crore in revenue for the airline.

In addition to the infant travel fee, the airline has also adjusted its excess baggage charge. The new fee is set at ₹800 per kilogram, up from ₹700. This new rate will apply to any passengers exceeding their allowed baggage limit.

IndiGo is also charging more for its priority check-in and boarding services, with prices increasing from ₹450 to ₹650. Furthermore, the fee for obtaining a travel certificate has been elevated from ₹200 to ₹300. For unaccompanied minors, the cost has changed from ₹5,000 to ₹5,999 for domestic flights, with charges for international flights set at ₹12,999.

The changes in fees for add-on services are part of IndiGo's routine evaluation of operational costs. Sources indicate that these adjustments are a response to the rising operational expenses faced by the airline, which include increased jet fuel prices and other financial pressures.

Recent reports indicate that InterGlobe Aviation Limited, IndiGo's parent company, recorded a standalone net loss of ₹382 crore for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, a stark contrast to a net profit of ₹2,161 crore during the same period last year. Fuel expenses have seen an 86% year-on-year increase, reaching ₹10,830 crore. Overall, IndiGo's total expenses surged by 34.4%, amounting to ₹25,853 crore.

As the airline industry continues to grapple with higher operating costs, other airlines have also begun to revise their charges. This trend coincides with a notable increase in airfares, impacting travel costs for many passengers.

IndiGo's strategy reflects an industry-wide adaptation in response to ongoing challenges, aiming to ensure financial sustainability while continuing to serve its vast customer base.
