India’s Pralay Missile Completes User Trials, Induction Expected Soon
India successfully conducted a test of its Pralay quasi-ballistic missile, confirming it meets operational requirements for induction into the armed forces. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced that the launch took place from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the Odisha coast. Reportedly, the test achieved all set objectives, as validated through data obtained from range instruments at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that the advanced technological features of the Pralay missile would significantly bolster the military's preparedness against emerging threats. User evaluation trials are crucial as they represent the final stage of assessment before a missile system's full induction into service, contrasting with developmental tests that DRDO performs to validate a weapon's functionality.
The flight test was successfully executed at 1110 hours and marks a pivotal advancement in enhancing India’s indigenous defence capabilities. Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, which follow a high arc that can be easily tracked, the Pralay missile is designed to fly at lower altitudes along a flatter trajectory. This capability allows it to manoeuvre mid-flight, making it more difficult for enemy air defences to intercept.
The Pralay missile is equipped to carry warheads ranging from 350 kg to 1,000 kg, including options for runway-denial and penetration-cum-blast types, rendering it a highly effective weapon against enemy airbases and other vital military targets. The missile's development was influenced by similar systems like China's Dongfeng-12. Since its first test in December 2021, the missile has undergone various assessments, including user trials at different ranges in July of the previous year and a dual launch in December.
Bharat Dynamics Limited, a partner in the development and production process, is responsible for manufacturing the missile. The Indian Defence Ministry has already sanctioned the procurement of 120 Pralay missiles for the Air Force, as well as a regiment for the Army. This recent success is expected to enhance India's strategic military capabilities significantly.
