Indian Women's Cricket Team Aims for Series Clean Sweep Against Sri Lanka
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian women's cricket team has made a strong start to the T20 International series against Sri Lanka, winning the first two matches convincingly. Their performance has highlighted a significant gap in skill and strategy compared to the visitors. With an aggressive approach both with the bat and ball, the Indian team has set the tone for the series from the outset.
The Indian bowlers have been particularly effective, taking early wickets that have continuously undermined Sri Lanka's batting order. This has forced the visiting team into a defensive posture, limiting their ability to build substantial innings. Consequently, the targets set for India have been manageable, allowing the home side to chase them down with relative ease.
Looking ahead to the third match at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, the Indian team is keen to secure a series victory. This match marks a historic occasion as it will be the first international women's fixture held at this venue, adding a sense of significance to the game.
However, the teamās focus extends beyond achieving immediate success. Head coach Amol Muzumdar, in a pre-match conference, emphasised the importance of preparing for the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup, which is a key factor in their current strategy. "Six months down the line, we have a T20 World Cup, so we are well aware of the areas we need to improve and the direction we need to take this side," he stated.
Muzumdar has praised the team's ability to maintain consistency following their triumph in the One Day International World Cup earlier this year. With two more series scheduled before the World Cup, this time is crucial for identifying areas that require enhancement.
Despite the teamās early successes, Muzumdar cautioned against underestimating the Sri Lankan side. "Although weāve won the first two matches, Sri Lanka cannot be taken lightly," he noted.
India has also begun experimenting with their squad, providing younger players with opportunities while keeping the established core intact. One promising newcomer, Vaishnavi Sharma, has made a notable impact, achieving bowling figures of 2/32 in the second match. Muzumdar commended her contributions, stating, "She did exactly what was asked of her. Credit to her that her exploits in the U-19 games were rewarded."
The coach attributed the depth of talent in domestic cricket as a significant factor in selection decisions and highlighted the team's ongoing commitment to improvement.
All-rounder Deepti Sharma, who missed the previous match due to illness, is expected to return to the squad, while Jemimah Rodrigues faced minor health issues during training on Thursday.
For the Sri Lankan team, the road ahead appears challenging. Their middle order has struggled to capitalise on good starts, and their inability to post competitive totals has placed immense pressure on their bowlers.
As the Indian team prepares for the upcoming match, Thiruvananthapuram presents not only a chance to clinch a 5-0 series victory but also an opportunity to further refine their T20 capabilities, reinforcing their status as a leading team in the format.
