Indian Teen Tragedy: Fatal Horse Carriage Accident in Central Park
An 18-year-old Indian boy died in a horse carriage accident in Central Park, New York City, raising safety concerns.

An 18-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park, New York City, on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Romanch Mahajan, was part of a family visiting from India for their first trip to the United States. Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 3 PM local time while Mahajan was riding in the carriage with three other passengers.

According to an article by The New York Times, the horse bolted away from its driver, causing the carriage to careen out of control. As a result, two of the other passengers were also ejected from the carriage. Mahajan was hospitalised in critical condition but later died from his injuries, while the other passengers declined medical treatment, as reported by the Associated Press.

Videos circulating online capture the chaotic moments of the accident, one showing the horse sprinting through the park while two individuals appear to leap from the moving carriage. A second video depicts the carriage toppling after colliding with another carriage in the busy park area.

Deepak Mahajan, the victim’s father, revealed that the accident occurred when the carriage driver stepped away to take a family photograph. “We were yelling, ‘Help me, help me!’” Deepak Mahajan recounted. When his wife, Priya Mahajan, fell out, Romanch jumped off in an attempt to assist her, leading to his fatal injuries. “My son, just to save his mother, he fell off,” Deepak Mahajan said, describing how his son struck his head on the ground and remained motionless.

A representative from the Transport Workers Union, which represents workers in the carriage industry, expressed a desire for a thorough investigation into the incident. This spokesperson noted that the driver should not have dismounted from the carriage while it was in motion. Alexander Kemp, administrative vice president of the union's local chapter, mentioned that the horse involved had only been in Central Park for six weeks. He urged for enhanced safety measures in the park, including for horse-drawn carriages, electric bicycles, and other vehicles.

New York State Senator Erik Bottcher extended his condolences to the Mahajan family and pointed out that this tragic event follows another recent incident involving a carriage horse that collapsed in Central Park. Bottcher remarked that the existence of horse-drawn carriages in such a busy environment poses significant risks. He is advocating for Ryder's Law, which seeks to address these concerns by eliminating horse-drawn carriages in New York City. “These incidents are a painful reminder that horse-drawn carriages do not belong in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world,” Bottcher stated, highlighting the need for immediate legislative action.

The family's shocking loss has ignited discussions on safety regulations concerning horse-drawn carriages in urban settings. This tragic accident has inevitably raised awareness of the ongoing concerns about the safety of both individuals and animals in such environments.
