Indian Stock Markets Decline for Second Day on Investor Caution
Indian stock markets experienced a decline for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, driven by caution among investors amidst conflicting geopolitical signals and fresh foreign fund withdrawals. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex dropped by 141.90 points, or 0.19%, closing at 75,867.80. Throughout the trading day, the index fluctuated within a range of 476.47 points, reaching a high of 76,224.68 and a low of 75,748.21.
Alongside the Sensex, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty fell by 6.55 points, or 0.03%, to settle at 23,907.15. This decline follows a significant drop on the previous day, when the Sensex fell by 479.26 points and the Nifty dropped by 118 points.
Key sectors that dampened market performance included financials, oil and gas, information technology, and private banking shares. Among the constituents of the Sensex, HDFC Bank had the most substantial decline, falling by 2.63%. Other notable laggards included Infosys, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Industries, and ICICI Bank.
In contrast, stocks in the energy, metals, and automobile sectors provided some support, with Power Grid, Eternal, and NTPC showing gains.
Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice-President of Research at Religare Broking Ltd, stated, "Investor sentiment remained cautious amid lingering concerns surrounding the fragile US-Iran truce and elevated crude oil prices."
Investors have adopted a cautious stance, with many opting for a wait-and-see approach due to geopolitical uncertainties. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, remarked that while the ongoing diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Iran have helped stabilise sentiment and mitigated aggressive selling, the lack of significant breakthroughs has restrained risk appetite.
Broader market indices reflected mixed trends, with the BSE SmallCap Select index sliding by 0.29%, while the MidCap Select index increased by 0.52%. Among sector-specific indices, the Top 10 Banks index fell by 0.90%, along with declines in Private Banks, Financial Services, and Bankex. On a positive note, Capital Goods advanced by 3.21%, Utilities by 2.39%, and Power by 3.27%.
In the Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei 225 concluded positively, while the SSE Composite in Shanghai and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index experienced declines. European markets, however, were trading in the green.
In foreign exchange, the Indian rupee weakened by 3 paise against the U.S. dollar, settling at 95.73. Stocks and forex markets will be closed on Thursday, 28 May 2026, in observance of Bakrid. The decline in crude oil prices likely influenced market sentiments, with Brent crude dropping by 3.24% to $96.35 per barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth ₹2,407.87 crore on 26 May 2026, according to exchange data.
