Indian Seafarer Killed in Missile Attack on Merchant Vessel Near Oman

An Indian national has tragically died following a missile attack on the MV Cape Dao, a bulk carrier registered under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, near the coast of Oman. The individual, identified as Wiper Suraj Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, sustained fatal head injuries during the incident. This horrific event prompted immediate action from the Indian government to ensure the safe repatriation of Yadav's remains and provide support to his family.

Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shared the news on Wednesday, expressing his condolences. In a post on social media platform X, he stated, 'My heartfelt condolences to the family of young Indian seafarer, Wiper Suraj Yadav, who tragically succumbed to head injuries following a missile attack on M.V. CAPE DAO.'

At the time of the attack, 20 Indian seafarers were aboard the vessel, which was on its route back to India. The remaining 19 crew members, fortunately, managed to escape safely. They were evacuated thanks to the prompt response of the Royal Navy of Oman and are currently situated ashore.

The Indian government has ensured that former crew members receive all necessary assistance, and directions have been issued to maritime authorities to liaise with both Omani authorities and the ship management company for the safe repatriation of Yadav's remains.

The Indian Embassy in Oman has also been active in coordinating efforts regarding the crew’s safety and is maintaining communication with the family of the deceased. However, details regarding the perpetrator of the attack remain unclear, and investigations are likely ongoing.

This incident highlights the risks faced by maritime workers, especially in regions where tension may escalate unexpectedly. The government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of seafarers and has called for stringent measures to ensure their safety in international waters.
