Indian President Droupadi Murmu Unveils Constitution in Santhali
On 26 December 2025, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the Constitution of India in the Santhali language during an event at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential residence in New Delhi. This initiative is particularly significant as Santhali is one of the oldest living languages in India and is spoken by numerous tribal communities across the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Santhali was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution through the 92nd Amendment Act in 2003, recognising its importance and promoting its use. The availability of the Constitution in Santhali, written in the Ol Chiki script, represents a landmark moment for the Santhali-speaking population, allowing them to access and understand the fundamental legal document in their native language.
During her address, President Murmu expressed that this move was a source of pride and joy for the Santhali people. She stated, "Providing the Constitution in the Santhali language is a vital step towards inclusivity and ensures that all citizens can engage with the laws governing them in a language they understand."
The release of the Constitution in Santhali is particularly timely as it coincides with the centenary of the Ol Chiki script, which was developed in the early 20th century by the Santhali scholar Raghunath Murmu. This script is specifically designed for the Santhali language and has played a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of Santhali culture and literature.
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and his team were acknowledged for their efforts in bringing this project to fruition. The launch was attended by Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan and several dignitaries, highlighting the event's significance in promoting linguistic diversity in India.
The introduction of the Constitution in Santhali not only empowers the community but also fosters a deeper understanding of democratic principles, rights, and responsibilities among Santhali speakers. It is expected to enhance civic engagement and awareness within the tribal population, facilitating greater participation in the democratic process.
This initiative underscores the Indian government's commitment to preserving and promoting linguistic diversity, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their linguistic background, have access to essential governmental documents and legal frameworks.
