Indian Equity Markets Decline Amid Interest Rate Concerns
India's equity benchmarks saw losses for a third week as investor uncertainty around interest rates weighed heavily on market sentiment.

Indian equity markets experienced a decline for the third consecutive week, influenced by uncertainties surrounding global interest rates, geopolitical tensions, and volatility related to the newly introduced Closing Auction Session. The Nifty index fell by 0.31 per cent for the week, closing at 24,175. On the other hand, the Sensex rose 330 points or 0.43 per cent to end at 77,264, but registered a weekly decrease of 0.36 per cent.

Market analysts observed that the uncertainty around the Closing Auction Session for futures and options stocks contributed to cautious trading behaviour among investors. The monthly derivatives expiry led to significant price fluctuations during the closing auction, heightening concerns over short-term volatility, especially among major stocks.

While the benchmarks saw a rebound on Friday, primarily driven by activity in information technology stocks following positive indicators from global tech markets, this recovery failed to offset the losses incurred earlier in the week. Remarks made by the Chairman of the US Federal Reserve during the Jackson Hole symposium led investors to reassess their expectations regarding the potential trajectory of interest rates and the shift towards a less accommodating monetary policy environment.

Concerns regarding US inflation and bond yields continue to cast uncertainty over foreign institutional investments in emerging markets, analysts have noted. Sector-wise performance was varied; the Nifty IT index surged approximately 2.45 per cent during the week, fuelled by renewed optimism surrounding global tech giants like Nvidia. Meanwhile, select pharmaceutical and metal stocks attracted investor interest, although weaknesses in some banking and consumer segments dampened broader market indices.

Lower crude oil prices provided some relief for industries sensitive to energy costs, with Brent crude dropping over 4 per cent during the week to around $88 a barrel, as expectations of improved shipping conditions through the Strait of Hormuz emerged. However, analysts cautioned that heightened geopolitical risks remain, and any disruption in energy supplies could quickly counteract this decline.

Looking ahead, the Nifty is expected to find immediate support within the 24,000 to 23,800 range, while resistance is anticipated at 24,300 to 24,400. In terms of the Bank Nifty, immediate support is expected between 56,900 and 56,500, with a key resistance zone identified at 57,800 to 58,000.

Investors are likely to closely monitor upcoming domestic gross domestic product data and global economic announcements for further market direction. In the United States, employment figures and the August non-farm payrolls report are set to be released on 4 September.
