Indian Defence Acquisition Council Approves Major Procurement Deals
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of India has approved several significant procurement proposals, totalling ₹2.12 lakh crore (approximately $25.7 billion). This decision is aimed at bolstering the military capabilities of the country.
The council met recently and reviewed multiple defence projects, focusing on enhancing India’s indigenous manufacturing capabilities. A substantial portion of the approved budget is allocated for the purchase of advanced weaponry systems, which include air defence and missile systems.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the DAC aims to encourage domestic suppliers, thus boosting the local defence manufacturing sector. This is aligned with the government’s initiative to reduce reliance on foreign imports.
Special emphasis was laid on projects that would not only strengthen India's defence arsenal but would also create job opportunities within the country. The procurement initiatives are set to have a positive economic impact by supporting local industries and fostering technological advancements.
The approval from the DAC comes amid growing concerns about regional security dynamics, necessitating a robust defence posture. The proposals are expected to be fast-tracked to meet the urgent needs of the armed forces, as per government sources.
In remarks following the announcement, a senior official stated, "These measures will significantly enhance our military readiness and ensure that we remain prepared to meet any challenges that arise."
As India navigates complex geopolitical challenges, these procurement decisions reflect a strategic approach to modernising its armed forces while fostering domestic capabilities. The government aims for a self-reliant defence sector, which is crucial for national security.
The approved deals will undergo further scrutiny and, once finalised, are anticipated to lead to considerable changes in India's defence and security landscape.
