Indian Coast Guard Intercepts Drug-Smuggling Operation at Sea

The Indian Coast Guard has successfully intercepted a significant narcotics smuggling attempt in a recent operation conducted in the Arabian Sea, specifically west of Lakshadweep. This operation was carried out alongside the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Central Intelligence Agency, following actionable intelligence that pinpointed a suspicious Iranian vessel.

On September 25, 2026, Coast Guard assets monitored the vessel, subsequently initiating a hot pursuit that led to its boarding and interception. Authorities confirmed the seizure of 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine, with a market value exceeding ₹3,000 crore.

Five Pakistani nationals aboard the intercepted dhow were taken into custody. Following the operation, both the crew and the vessel were escorted to Mumbai for further investigations and legal proceedings, involving multiple enforcement agencies.

The Indian Coast Guard highlighted the operation's goals as being integral to securing India's maritime borders against transnational drug trafficking and organised crime. A representative stated, "This successful interception exemplifies our unwavering commitment to safeguarding India's waters and combating illicit trafficking."

Officials emphasised that such operations serve not only to disrupt criminal networks but also align with the government's objectives, including initiatives aimed at reducing drug misuse in the country. The Coast Guard aims to minimise the flow of dangerous substances to mainland India, thereby protecting the youth and ensuring enhanced maritime security.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by maritime authorities in addressing the persistent threat of drug smuggling in the region, with operations involving international collaboration playing a critical role in combating this issue.
