Indian Air Force Conducts Exercise on Purvanchal Expressway
The Indian Air Force (IAF) demonstrated its operational versatility with a series of flight maneuvers on an emergency airstrip along the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. This two-day exercise showcased the capabilities of various military aircraft, including Jaguar fighter jets and C-295 transport aircraft, delighting local residents.
Taking place in the Sultanpur district, the exercise involved a variety of aircraft types, including the Mirage-2000, Su-30 MKI, and AN-32, alongside Mi-17 V5 helicopters and the Garud Commando team. A senior IAF official commented on the event, stating that it significantly enhanced the IAF's ability to conduct operations without reliance on standard runways, underscoring the force's operational resilience.
The purpose of the emergency airstrip built on the expressway is to provide crucial support during emergencies, advancing national security and disaster response capabilities. Local communities expressed excitement as they had the opportunity to witness the aircraft up close during the event.
Security was notably heightened in the area surrounding the exercise. Authorities enforced traffic regulations and established an air traffic control system to manage the aircraft during the manoeuvres. Residents were advised to maintain a safe distance from the airstrip and disregard any misinformation circulating in the community.
Traffic on a 12-kilometre stretch of the expressway was diverted until May 1 as a precaution, with normal operations expected to resume on May 2. Similar exercises have been conducted in the past; notably, in June 2023, IAF aircraft performed touch-and-go operations on the same emergency airstrip.
The recent activity allowed the IAF to validate its standard operating procedures for activating emergency landing facilities swiftly. The event highlighted the flying skills of the air crew and the ground team's capacity to activate airstrips on short notice.
The collaboration between the IAF, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), and the local civil administration has been essential in optimising the efficacy of such airstrips. This coordinated approach is believed to enhance not only military operational readiness but also humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts across the region.
Air Marshal B Manikantan, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command, as well as local dignitaries including Uttar Pradesh Minister O P Rajbhar and UPEIDA CEO Deepak Kumar, were present during the demonstration, reflecting the significance of the event in the context of regional security and emergency preparedness.
