Pahalgam Attack Anniversary: Families Remember Victims of Terrorism
A year after the Pahalgam attack, families of victims mourn their losses and seek government support amidst ongoing grief and struggles.

April 22, 2025, is a date that remains significant as a tragic day when terrorists attacked Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the deaths of 26 individuals. This horrific event has left deep emotional scars on the families affected, marking a year of substantial loss and hardship. Asavari Jagdale is one individual who embodies this ongoing struggle. She lost her father, Santosh Jagdale, in the attack. Reflecting on the past year, Asavari shared her family's emotional burden and the impact of the tragedy on their lives. 'This one year was very difficult for me and my family. It would have been equally tough for the 25 other families who lost their loved ones in front of their eyes... We have been through hell in the last one year—losing a loved one and struggling for all the promises made by the government,' Asavari stated, as reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI). The shared nature of this tragedy has fostered a collective grief among the impacted families, many of whom witnessed the violence firsthand.

On the day before the first anniversary, the Indian Army paid tribute to the victims while also reiterating its stand against terrorism through Operation Sindoor. The Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) posted a message on the social media platform X, stating, 'When boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive. Justice is Served. India Stands United.' This statement was accompanied by a graphic emphasising that 'Some boundaries should never be crossed. India does not forget.' The attack was noted for its particularly brutal nature, with reports suggesting that victims were asked about their religion before being killed, highlighting the communal element of the violence.

Alongside Asavari, the wife of another victim, Prasanta Kumar Satapathy, recalled the life-altering repercussions of that day. 'My husband's name was late Prasanta Kumar Satapathy. He passed away in the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, because of the terrorists. It's been almost a year. As they say, life goes on. But not a single day has gone by that I haven't remembered him. When he was here, life was different,' she remarked, as reported by ANI. She described the shift from having a supportive partner to managing household responsibilities alone. 'With the temporary job I have, it's managing. Because at that time, the government said they would give me a government job, they would bear the expenses of my child's education, and they would provide financial assistance. We received the financial assistance, but the government job they promised hasn't been provided yet,' she added, expressing a strong desire for the government to fulfil its commitments.

In response to the Pahalgam attack, India conducted Operation Sindoor beginning on May 7, 2025. This operation targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and regions of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to significant military activity against groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. During the operation, over 100 terrorists were reported killed, sparking a four-day conflict that included drone strikes and artillery fire. In the aftermath of these military actions, a ceasefire was established following communication between military operations directors from both India and Pakistan.

The continuing efforts for justice and security have been part of a broader response from Indian authorities. Operation Mahadev also resulted in the elimination of three terrorists identified as involved in the Pahalgam attack. On the diplomatic front, India has taken steps such as terminating the longstanding Indus Waters Treaty and suspending bilateral trade with Pakistan as part of its strategy against terrorism. As families continue to grapple with their losses, the unresolved grief echoes the broader struggle against violence and the quest for justice in a region still marked by conflict and uncertainty.
