India Wins T20I Opener Against England by 38 Runs
In the opening match of the women's T20 International series, India achieved a commanding 38-run victory over England at the County Ground in Chelmsford on May 28, 2026. The match marked the beginning of a three-match series ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, which starts on June 12.
India's batting showcased resilience as Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia both scored half-centuries, helping to recover from an early slump. Stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana was dismissed without scoring, and her opening partner Shafali Verma managed only two runs before being removed by Lauren Bell, who finished with impressive bowling figures of 3/34.
Despite the rocky start, Rodrigues initiated a significant recovery. The 22-year-old scored 69 runs off 40 balls, hitting ten fours and one six. Yastika, returning after a two-year hiatus, contributed with her own brisk 54 runs off 40 deliveries, marking her first T20I fifty. Together, they formed a vital partnership, amassing 126 runs for the third wicket off just 76 balls.
Yastika reached her half-century in 31 balls, demonstrating remarkable skill after knee surgery. Rodrigues also struck her fifty off 31 balls. Despite a brief collapse where Richa Ghosh and Bharti Fulmali fell quickly, a late flourish from Deepti Sharma, who scored an unbeaten 22 off 13 balls, helped India set a competitive target of 188 runs.
In their response, England struggled to maintain momentum after losing key players early on. Amy Jones kept the chase alive with a fighting innings of 67 runs off 48 balls, aided by a partnership with Heather Knight, who added 21. Notably, during this match, Knight became the most-capped player in England Women's history across all formats, surpassing Charlotte Edwards' record with 310 appearances.
However, India's Nandani Sharma, making her international debut, proved to be a game-changer. She took crucial wickets, dismissing Jones in the 16th over, followed by quick dismissals of Dani Gibson and Wong, ending with figures of 3/34. Kranti Gaud contributed with two wickets, while Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma each took one, ensuring England finished their innings at 150 runs for eight.
“The partnership with Yastika was crucial. We assessed the conditions well,” Rodrigues stated after receiving the player-of-the-match accolade. She emphasised the importance of trusting her instincts and making solid plays.
With this victory, India leads the series 1-0, building confidence before their next encounter against England, which is set to be pivotal for both teams as they prepare for the T20 World Cup.
