India have won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, securing a historic victory and successfully defending the title.

A dominant batting performance helped India post a formidable total of 255 for five in their 20 overs before their bowlers dismantled New Zealand’s chase, dismissing the side for 159 in the 19th over.

Record-Breaking Total Sets the Tone

India’s innings was built around an aggressive start and sustained attacking play throughout the match.

Sanju Samson produced the standout performance with a commanding innings of 89 runs, the highest individual score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. His innings anchored the Indian batting line-up and helped push the team to one of the highest totals in the history of a tournament final.

The strong foundation was laid early by Abhishek Sharma, who scored a rapid half-century from just 18 deliveries. His aggressive approach during the opening overs propelled India past the 50-run mark within four overs.

The early acceleration created momentum that the Indian side maintained for the remainder of the innings.

Ishan Kishan added further impetus with a quick 54 from 25 balls, ensuring the scoring rate remained high through the middle overs. Shivam Dube also contributed with a short but impactful cameo, scoring 26 runs from only eight deliveries.

Together, the performances helped India reach 255 for five, setting New Zealand an extremely demanding target.

New Zealand Struggle in the Chase

New Zealand began their pursuit cautiously but soon faced mounting pressure from India’s bowling attack.

The required run rate quickly climbed as Indian bowlers struck at regular intervals, preventing New Zealand from establishing partnerships.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah played a key role in dismantling the batting line-up, taking four wickets and applying sustained pressure during crucial phases of the innings.

Spin bowler Axar Patel also made a significant contribution, claiming three wickets and restricting scoring opportunities in the middle overs.

Despite attempts by New Zealand’s batters to rebuild the innings, the team struggled to match the pace set by India’s total.

The New Zealand side was eventually bowled out for 159 runs in the 19th over, sealing a comprehensive victory for India.

Historic Achievement for India

The win represents a significant milestone in international cricket.

With the victory, India became the first team to successfully defend the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. The triumph also marked the country’s third overall T20 World Cup victory.

It is also the first time a host nation has lifted the trophy on home soil in the history of the tournament.

India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, led the side through a tournament marked by strong batting performances and consistent bowling displays.

Throughout the competition, India maintained an aggressive playing style that often produced high-scoring matches and decisive victories.

Atmosphere at Ahmedabad Stadium

The final was played before a large crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world’s largest cricket stadium.
