Ananda Bose Resignation: Ex-Bengal Governor Keeps Reasons Secret
Former West Bengal Governor Chakravarthi V. Ananda Bose has said his decision to step down from office was deliberate, but the reasons behind it will remain undisclosed until what he described as the “right time”.
Speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Sunday, the former governor confirmed that his resignation was not abrupt but a carefully considered move following more than three years in the post.
Bose explained that he had chosen to keep the reasons private for the moment, despite widespread speculation about the circumstances surrounding his departure.
“I took a conscious decision to put in my papers, the reasons of which will remain confidential till the right time arrives,” he told journalists.
Governor’s Departure Raises Questions
C. V. Ananda Bose had served as the Governor of West Bengal for more than three years, overseeing the constitutional office that represents the President of India in the state.
In India’s federal structure, a state governor performs largely ceremonial duties but also holds certain constitutional responsibilities, including overseeing government formation and ensuring the functioning of the state administration.
Bose described his tenure using a sporting metaphor, comparing his time in office to a long cricket innings.
“I spent over 1200 days in office. That’s equivalent to scoring 12 centuries on the cricket field. The rules of the game include knowing when it ends,” he said.
He added that he had always expected that his time in office would eventually come to a close and that he had been given the freedom to decide when to step down.
Remarks at Kolkata Airport
The former governor made the comments while speaking to reporters at Kolkata airport shortly after returning from New Delhi.
According to Bose, he had submitted his resignation from Kolkata before leaving for the national capital.
He also said he intends to return to West Bengal to cast his vote in future elections, noting that he had recently shifted his voting registration to the state.
Originally from the southern Indian state of Kerala, Bose had formally changed his voter registration to West Bengal shortly before stepping down from the governorship.
Avoiding Political Controversy
During the interaction with journalists, Bose declined to respond directly to questions about political developments in the state, including recent tensions between the state government and national political leaders.
When asked about remarks by President Droupadi Murmu regarding alleged protocol issues during a recent event in West Bengal, the former governor chose not to comment.
“The President is very experienced, balanced and an extremely dignified person,” he said. “She must have had her reasons for saying what she said. But I am no one to comment on what the President said.”
His remarks come amid a wider political dispute following the President’s visit to a tribal community event in northern West Bengal, which led to criticism from national leaders and responses from the state government.
Political Reactions in West Bengal
The resignation has drawn political reactions within West Bengal, where tensions between the state government and the central government have been a recurring feature of the political landscape.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suggested that Bose’s departure may have been linked to pressure from national political figures.
Speaking earlier, she alleged that the former governor had faced threats and criticised what she described as attempts to use the governor’s residence for political purposes.
Bose, however, declined to respond directly to these claims when asked by reporters.
“It would be inappropriate for a departing governor to comment under the current circumstances,” he said.
The chief minister’s remarks reflect the broader political rivalry between the Trinamool Congress, which governs West Bengal, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the party that leads India’s national government.
Role of the Governor in Indian States
In India, governors are appointed by the President and typically serve as the constitutional head of a state. Their responsibilities include administering the oath of office to elected governments, overseeing legislative processes and ensuring that the constitution is upheld.
Although the position is largely ceremonial, disagreements between governors and elected state governments occasionally become politically sensitive, particularly in states governed by parties different from the one in power at the national level.
West Bengal has experienced several such tensions in recent years, with political leaders often debating the limits of gubernatorial authority.
Context: Speculation Surrounding the Exit
Bose’s resignation has prompted speculation among political observers about the timing and motivations behind his departure.
His decision to keep the reasons confidential has added to the uncertainty, as neither the former governor nor central authorities have publicly explained the circumstances.
For now, Bose has indicated that further details may emerge at a later stage, suggesting that the full explanation for his decision could become clear in the future.
Until then, his brief remarks leave unanswered questions about one of the most unexpected developments in West Bengal’s recent political landscape.
