India Revises Passport Rules for Minors Under 15 Years Old

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has amended its regulations concerning child passports. Effective immediately, passports issued to individuals under the age of 15 will now be valid for a period of five years. Alternatively, these passports will remain valid until the child reaches the age of 18, whichever comes first.

This change is aimed at streamlining the passport application process for minors. Authorities believe that the previous validity period was insufficient, given the rapid changes that can occur in a child's appearance during their early years.

The MEA emphasised that this updated rule will provide greater flexibility for families and align with international practices regarding passports issued to children. This move is seen as part of broader efforts by the Indian government to simplify bureaucratic processes and make them more accessible to citizens.

As per the report, the updated guidelines also highlight a focus on improving the overall efficiency of passport services, which have historically faced challenges in terms of processing times and accessibility.
