India Protests After Fatal Attack on Merchant Vessel with Indians
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned the Ukrainian Ambassador to India, Serhiy Korsunsky, to express its strong condemnation of an attack that resulted in the death of an Indian national aboard a merchant vessel in the Black Sea. The MEA reported that the incident involved an assault on a ship with four Indians on board, underlining the seriousness of maritime security in the region.
The attack, which occurred on 24 October 2023, has raised concerns regarding the safety of Indian seafarers operating in conflict zones, particularly amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The government of India has expressed its profound sorrow over the incident and is seeking further information regarding the circumstances surrounding this attack.
In an official statement, the ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all Indian nationals globally, especially those working in precarious environments. The MEA has also called on the Ukrainian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and implement necessary measures to safeguard maritime security and prevent any future occurrences.
While tensions remain high in the Black Sea region due to the conflict, India has been proactive in advocating for the safety of its citizens. A senior official from the MEA stated, “The lives of our nationals are a top priority, and we will not hesitate to address any actions that compromise their safety.”
The international community has been closely watching developments in the Black Sea, where naval confrontations and security threats have been reported since the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine. India’s response to this incident reflects its stance on maritime cooperation and the protection of its citizens engaged in global trade.
As India navigates its diplomatic efforts in response to the attack, the focus remains on mitigating risks for its seafarers and enhancing collaboration on maritime safety with international partners.
