India's Ministry Responds to Sheikh Hasina's Remarks in Delhi

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a statement clarifying that it does not endorse the comments made by Sheikh Hasina during her recent media appearance in Delhi. These remarks have sparked debate and differing views among political figures in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, spoke at a press conference in Delhi, where she expressed her intention to return to Bangladesh in December. This event marked her first public address in two years, following her government's ousting during protests in 2024.

Hasina's comments were perceived by some as an assertion of her political aspirations, leading to a mixed reaction from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other political entities. Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, a BNP MP, publicly suggested that the Awami League, currently banned, could merge with the BNP, describing the Awami League as an ally. This statement has caused a division within the party, as other members have openly disagreed.

At a rally, Chowdhury stated, “The Awami League is not our enemy, they are our allies. We fought the Liberation War together with them.” His remarks highlighted a notion of unity, albeit met with skepticism from various factions within the BNP.

However, the senior leaders of the BNP, including Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, have condemned Hasina's media engagement. Rizvi accused Indian policymakers of orchestrating the event to coincide with the anniversary of the July Uprising — a historical event of significance in Bangladesh. He asserted that Hasina's statements undermined Bangladesh's sovereignty and disrespected the memory of those who fought for democracy during the uprising.

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry echoed these sentiments, accusing India of allowing its platform to be used to project Hasina's political agenda, which it deemed detrimental to bilateral relations between the two countries. This has raised concerns regarding India's role in facilitating such dialogues as they relate to the internal political landscape of Bangladesh.
