India Introduces Three-Year Safeguard Duty on Flat Steel Imports

India has implemented a three-year safeguard duty on imports of flat steel products in a bid to bolster its domestic steel industry. The decision, announced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to shield local producers from the adverse impacts of rising imports that have allegedly disrupted the domestic market.

The safeguard duty will be set at 15% for the first year, followed by a reduction to 10% in the second year, and 5% in the final year. This phased approach is intended to provide a buffer for local manufacturers while gradually adjusting to the new import regulations.

The move is seen as a response to a significant increase in flat steel imports, which has raised concerns among domestic steelmakers about their ability to compete. The Indian Steel Association (ISA) has welcomed the government's decision, stating that it will help to level the playing field for local manufacturers.
