INDIA Bloc Demands Resignation of Education Minister Pradhan
Leaders of the opposition alliance known as the INDIA bloc convened a press conference on June 8, 2026, where they called for the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The bloc's demands stemmed from allegations that Pradhan oversaw significant issues affecting numerous students who took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that the minister had betrayed the interests of many young people.
In addition to demanding Pradhan's resignation, Kharge declared that the bloc would approach the Chief Justice of India regarding the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter rolls and allegations of 'vote loot.' He stated that the union government should convene an all-party meeting aimed at addressing the current economic challenges facing the country, including issues related to unemployment and rising prices.
During the conference, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concerns regarding the electoral process. She reiterated claims of electoral theft and referred to instances of post-election violence that she perceived as governmental interference.
Other leaders within the coalition, including Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee, echoed the need for a cohesive response to what they see as growing discontent among the electorate, particularly the youth. They pointed to increasing protests encapsulated by recent demonstrations under the banner of the Cockroach Janata Party. Notably, the meeting also included discussions about the bloc’s organisational structure, with several leaders advocating for more coordinated efforts.
Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Samajwadi Party, highlighted the need for strategic collaboration to counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in upcoming elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. He acknowledged the Congress's broader presence but urged it to be more accommodating to regional parties within the alliance.
Furthermore, discussions touched upon the various electoral discrepancies disclosed recently. Reports indicated that over 22 lakh candidates for NEET faced disruptions due to a cancelled examination amid allegations of malpractices. Similar claims have been raised regarding the CBSE’s on-screen evaluation process. Many students have reported inconsistencies in grading that have added to their frustrations.
The bloc members agreed to meet every two months to reinforce their cooperation. The next gathering is planned for August in Hyderabad, with daily meetings continuing during parliamentary sessions. Despite internal criticisms, Kharge affirmed his commitment to unity within the coalition, stating: 'We will work with love and affection to uphold the alliance.'
This ongoing situation highlights the tensions within Indian politics as opposition parties strive to present a unified front against the ruling government. The INDIA bloc’s emphasis on addressing youth grievances and electoral integrity marks a significant aspect of their platform moving forward.
