Congress Electoral Strategy Criticised by VCK Leader Thirumavalavan
Thol. Thirumavalavan, president of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), has voiced strong criticism of the Indian National Congress' electoral strategy. Speaking at a meeting of the INDIA bloc in New Delhi, he stated that Congress' approach has led to weakened performances of allied parties—the Trinamool Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)—in West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, respectively.
Mr. Thirumavalavan highlighted that the dissatisfaction among various constituents of the INDIA bloc stems from Congress’ strategies. He urged members of the alliance to adopt a definitive stance on the three-language policy advocated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government.
Additionally, he called for thorough discussions regarding the recommendations of the Justice Kurian Joseph Commission, which pertains to Centre-State relations. Thirumavalavan believes that such dialogues are critical for reinforcing federal principles and protecting state rights within India.
He stated, “To effectively carry forward such struggles, mutual trust, understanding, and unity among opposition parties are indispensable. The Congress’ electoral strategy in Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu has weakened parties that have been among the strongest pillars of this alliance. This is neither desirable nor beneficial to the larger cause of opposition unity.”
Emphasising the importance of mutual cooperation, Thirumavalavan expressed that while differences of opinion among the various national and regional parties within the bloc are expected, they should not escalate into divisions. He noted that maintaining this unity is a shared responsibility, requiring both regional and national parties to reassess their approaches, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in Centre-State relations.
The VCK president also addressed issues in the education sector, criticising the BJP for its alleged mismanagement. He referenced multiple incidents of exam question paper leaks which have led to cancellations and highlighted systemic failures within the educational framework.
Thirumavalavan lamented, “The present situation has arisen in part because we, as political forces, have failed to consistently mobilise and fight for the issues confronting the youth.” He suggested that the INDIA bloc should not view the Cockroach Janta Party—which raises youth concerns—as an adversary, but rather should unite to amplify the voices of young citizens through broader platforms, advocating for coordinated nationwide protests.
