Hyundai's New Mass-Market Electric Vehicle Could Be Ioniq P
In a bid to enhance its foothold in India's rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market, Hyundai Motor Company is reportedly preparing to launch a new mass-market electric vehicle. Current reports suggest this new model could be branded as the 'Ioniq P', although this has yet to be officially confirmed by the company. The Ioniq name is well-established globally as a popular electric vehicle line, making it a fitting choice for Hyundai's latest offering.
During the Q3 2026 earnings call of Hyundai Motor India, executives indicated that the Ioniq P would follow the recently launched Bayon model. Despite this information, company officials have refrained from explicitly linking the new small electric vehicle to the Ioniq P designation at this time. Nevertheless, Hyundai has officially trademarked the name IONIQ P in India.
The introduction of this new mass-market electric model aligns with Hyundai's broader goals in electrification, with the aim of increasing its market share in the expanding electric segment. However, the company has not disclosed specific sales targets for the Ioniq P.
Currently, Hyundai's EV lineup in India includes the Creta Electric and the Ioniq 5. By introducing a more accessible electric model, Hyundai aims to boost the percentage contribution of electric vehicles to its overall sales. This strategy is consistent with the industry's increasing drive towards electrification, particularly in light of uncertainties regarding global oil supply.
The Indian automotive market has demonstrated a positive response to electric mobility, with EVs and hybrids now accounting for nearly 20% of total passenger vehicle sales in the country. Sales of electric cars in the financial year 2027 have surged by almost 90% to date. While Hyundai ranks among the top ten in India’s EV sales, its market share in this segment remains in single digits. To shift this dynamic, expanding its portfolio to include mass-market offerings is essential.
Other automotive manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki, Vinfast, and Honda, are also developing new mass-market electric vehicles tailored for the Indian market.
The anticipated Hyundai Ioniq P is likely to be constructed on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which underpins the Inster EV sold worldwide. Expected features include two battery pack options, offering both standard and long-range versions. Although specific specifications are yet to be divulged, performance might closely resemble that of the Inster EV, which offers battery options of 42 kWh and 49 kWh with a certified range of up to 355 km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure.
Hyundai is set to implement significant localisation in the production of the new electric vehicle, which will aid in achieving a competitive pricing strategy. Manufacturing will take place at Hyundai’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. During the initial production phase, imported battery cells will be utilised. The company has a partnership with Exide for locally produced battery cells; however, these will not be available in the current year, leading to local sourcing of battery cells commencing at a later date.
The new Hyundai electric vehicle will not only focus on affordability but will also feature advanced amenities like the Pleos Connect infotainment system and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Competing models in the segment will include the Tata Punch EV, Nexon EV, Syros EV, and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, further intensifying the competition in India's electric vehicle market.
