Hyrox Beijing Competitors Receive Full Refunds Following Incident

Hyrox China announced full refunds for athletes after an incident during a recent event in Beijing. The decision came in response to public backlash following a disqualification issue involving elite Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk, who continued to compete despite experiencing incontinence during the women's solo event.

The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon, overwhelming the event's hygiene protocols. Wietrzyk's race, which began at 2:40 PM, resulted in contaminated shared equipment and track surfaces affecting over 1,000 subsequent participants. As a direct result, Hyrox has revised its rule book to empower race directors to remove competitors if they threaten the hygiene of the competition.

In an email to participants, organisers confirmed refunds for all competitors who started the race before 2:40 PM and those who competed in heat batches until 8:40 PM, provided they had not finished by that time. Wietrzyk managed to finish her race in just over an hour, securing victory across the demanding 8-kilometre course featuring eight obstacles.

After the incident, Hyrox China issued an apology, stating: “First, when the unexpected incident occurred during the afternoon session, we failed to timely arrange for the involved athlete to leave the track.” They expressed regret for not providing an adequate experience for the participants affected, saying they would review their procedures to mitigate similar occurrences in the future.

On-site staff took immediate action to disinfect the affected areas and replaced the track carpet later that evening. The organisation has mandated that any athlete who has not received their refund within ten working days should get in touch for resolution.

This week’s actions by Hyrox China highlight the importance of hygiene in competitive environments, especially as the competition is expanding globally, with events now held across various countries.

Joanna Wietrzyk, despite winning, acknowledged the impact of her actions during the event. She stated her regret, reflecting on the incident that led to heightened concerns about health protocols at sporting events.
