Houthi Forces Capture Yemen's Red Sea Coast Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Houthi forces, backed by Iran, have gained control over the entirety of Yemen's Red Sea coastline, advancing to the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait. This move comes as part of an aggressive military campaign aimed at seizing key positions along the Red Sea.

Recently, the Houthis captured the port city of Mocha, marking one of their most significant victories against the internationally recognised Yemeni government, which has received support from Saudi Arabia. Analysts view this as a critical development in the broader regional conflict, especially in light of the ongoing war declared by the United States and Israel against Iran earlier this year.

The Houthis had previously declared a blockade on Saudi-flagged vessels operating in the Red Sea. With their newfound control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, they now hold a crucial chokepoint for maritime trade, which is vital for Saudi Arabia's oil exports. The strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and sees around 12 per cent of global trade passing through it daily.

Following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz—a key route for global energy supplies—the Houthis' control over Bab al-Mandeb adds to the pressures on Saudi Arabia, which has been relying on alternative routes for its oil exports. Since the outset of the conflict, Saudi Arabia has enhanced the capacity of its East-West Crude Oil Pipeline to transport oil from its eastern oil fields to the western port of Yanbu on the Red Sea, allowing it to bypass the now-volatile Strait of Hormuz.

Before the escalation of hostilities, the pipeline had capacity for five million barrels per day. It has since been increased to accommodate up to seven million barrels per day, driven by heightened demand following the conflict. Analysts note that 21 per cent more oil is now being shipped via Bab al-Mandeb compared to prior to the outbreak of war.

Despite their advances, concerns remain regarding the Houthis' capacity to sustain prolonged control over these strategic territories. The Yemeni government’s military, estimated at 300,000 personnel, still possesses a numerical advantage; however, internal divisions and persistent pressure from Saudi Arabia have hindered their effectiveness. Experts like Mohamad Elmasry from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies describe the Houthis as a more competent fighting force than previously encountered by Saudi-led coalitions.

The prevailing instability in the region not only poses risks to Saudi petroleum interests but also threatens to exacerbate the global energy crisis, according to warnings from various experts on Middle Eastern dynamics. Control over Bab al-Mandeb enables Iran to assert more influence in the region and potentially destabilises US efforts to maintain dominance in Middle Eastern geopolitics.

The situation has profound implications for international relations, especially as rising fuel prices and inflation have made the US's ongoing military strategy increasingly unpopular among voters ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections. President Donald Trump acknowledged that the potential for resolving the conflict appears limited within this timeframe.

As the Houthis continue to solidify their territorial gains, observers are closely watching how this will shape regional dynamics and influence global energy markets in the months to come.
