Honda Patents WN7 Electric Motorcycle in India Amid Launch Speculation
Honda has patented the WN7 electric motorcycle in India, stirring anticipation for its potential launch in the growing electric vehicle market.

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) has transitioned from its traditional internal combustion engine motorcycles to the electric vehicle segment, evidenced by its recent developments in electric scooters. The company's earlier efforts to enter the electric vehicle market faced challenges, leading to the withdrawal of models such as Active E and QC1. However, Honda has now patented a new electric motorcycle, the WN7, which is raising expectations for a possible upcoming launch.

Unveiled in September 2025, the WN7 marks Honda's first foray into the sports electric motorcycle category. It is essentially the production-ready version of the Honda EV Fun electric motorcycle concept that was showcased in November 2024. In a notable recognition of its design, the Honda WN7 received the Gold Award at the iF Design Award 2026, a first for any Honda product.

The speculation surrounding the WN7's launch is coupled with concerns that this patent may primarily serve as an intellectual property protection strategy in India. Historically, many Honda motorcycle patents have been filed, but not all have made it to market.

From a design perspective, the Honda WN7 features a contemporary appearance characterised by a robotic front, minimalistic lines, and a unified design that covers the frame and battery. This configuration creates a look reminiscent of a traditional fuel tank. Its wide handlebar and circular bar-end mirrors complement its sleek aesthetic. Notable features include an extensive LED daytime running light (DRL) array and vertically aligned headlights. The motorcycle is equipped with a single-piece seat and a monocoque subframe, enhancing its overall appearance.

In terms of performance, the 'N' in WN7 signifies 'naked' motorcycles, while 'W' relates to the development vision 'Be The Wind'. The '7' indicates its performance classification. The WN7 is powered by a single electric motor generating a peak output of 50.4 kilowatts (equivalent to 67.5 brake horsepower) and 100 Newton-metres of torque. This powertrain aims to deliver performance comparable to 600cc combustion engine motorcycles.

Additionally, the Honda WN7 is equipped with a 9.3 kilowatt-hour battery pack, offering an estimated range of 130 kilometres on a full charge. It supports rapid recharging through a CCS2 charging port, capable of elevating the battery's state of charge from 20% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. The motorcycle features a 5-inch TFT instrument display, complete with connected features, and has a total weight of 217 kilograms.

In the UK, the Honda WN7 is currently available for a starting price of £12,999, approximately 16.74 lakh Indian Rupees. However, the likelihood of the WN7 launching in India appears low, particularly when compared to the Honda Airblade, which has been patented and might have a better chance of entering the Indian market.
