Heart Surgeon Highlights Critical Importance of Sleep for Health
Dr Jeremy London emphasises the necessity of sleep for overall health, noting its impact on various bodily functions.

Many individuals strive for a healthier lifestyle by focusing on diet and exercise, often overlooking a key element: sleep. According to Dr Jeremy London, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with over 25 years of experience, inadequate sleep can have serious implications for overall health.

In a recent Instagram video, Dr London asserted that sleep should not be viewed as a luxury but rather as a vital biological necessity. He explained that chronic sleep deprivation leads to significant negative effects on the body, extending beyond merely feeling tired.

Dr London pointed out that many people believe they can compensate for poor sleep with exercise and nutritious meals. However, he stresses, "You exercise hard, you eat well, but you sleep less than 5 hours a night. Now, sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. I used to say all of the time, ‘I'll sleep when I'm dead.’ But that may be sooner than you think if you're not careful."

Research indicates that even one week of insufficient sleep can disrupt various bodily functions. Dr London noted that it can affect testosterone levels, insulin sensitivity, and blood sugar regulation, hinder the body’s response to food, and slow recovery from physical activity.

Moreover, sleep deprivation alters behavioural patterns, leading to increased cravings for carbohydrates and calorie-dense foods. Such changes often result in individuals consuming an additional 300 to 400 calories per day without increasing their physical activity levels to burn them off.

He stated, "A week of poor quality sleep has been studied in the lab many times, and the patterns hold. Testosterone drops. Insulin sensitivity falls, where the same meal hits differently; blood sugar remains elevated, and glucose fails to reach muscles as effectively. Our appetites change; we crave carbs and calorie-dense foods."

Dr London reiterated that sleep is a crucial pillar of health that should not be neglected. He explained that prioritising quality sleep enables the body to recover, affecting energy levels and the health choices made throughout the day. "You can do all of the work. But poor quality sleep can quietly discount any benefit that you get. Sleep is where our bodies recover and repair. When your sleep is off, everything downstream is off," he concluded.

This commentary serves as a reminder that sleep is integral to maintaining overall health and well-being. Dr London’s insights highlight the need for individuals to recognise and address sleep as a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle.
