Guwahati Homestay Sealed After Student Found Dead Under Suspicion

Authorities in Guwahati have sealed a homestay after the death of a 22-year-old student from Gauhati University. The student was discovered unconscious early on Saturday and later pronounced dead at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

The incident has drawn significant media attention as the victim's father has alleged that she was gang-raped and murdered. He claims that his daughter called her mother in the early hours of Saturday, stating that she was being tortured and feared for her life. According to him, the conversation abruptly ended when her phone was switched off.

"She told her mother that they were torturing her, that they would kill her, and asked her to save her," the father reported. He expressed his belief that multiple assailants were involved in the alleged assault, highlighting numerous injuries on her body, including damage to her lips and other areas. The father called for a thorough investigation into her death and expressed his desire for justice.

Local officials confirmed that one man has been arrested in connection with the case, suspected to be the victim's boyfriend. Bolin Deori, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Guwahati West, indicated that a post-mortem examination would provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death. The police have stated that they noted multiple injuries on the victim’s body but found no blood at the scene or the homestay, raising questions about the cause of death.

The family of the accused has maintained that the victim was in a consensual relationship with him, previously visiting his home and expressing an interest in marriage. The mother of the accused conveyed that she had discussed cultural differences with the victim but expressed her desire for justice, stating that if he is guilty, he should face the consequences.

While the investigation is ongoing, the police are also looking into other individuals connected to the case. They have declined to confirm the father's claims of gang rape at this stage. Local health facilities alerted authorities after the student was brought in unresponsive.
