Gulveer's achievement marks a significant improvement over his previous national record of 13:11.82, which he set in Japan in September 2024. The athlete, affiliated with the Indian Army, has shown consistent performance on the global stage, actively participating in competitive events designed to push athletes towards Olympic and World Championship qualifying standards.
"Indian Army Athlete strikes again on the global stage! Nb Sub Gulveer Singh of Army Sports Institute delivered a sensational performance at the Sound Running Track Fest. Silver Medal in Men’s 5000m, New National Record – 13:03.93," stated the Indian Army Sports and Adventure in a post on social media.

As he continues to train, Gulveer is optimistic about his chances at future competitions, including the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games scheduled for July and the Asian Games in September.
This recent performance comes after a series of notable participations in international events this year. In January, he finished 40th in the senior men’s race at the World Cross Country Championships. By February, he clinched third place in the 5000m short track at the Sound Running Invite in Winston-Salem, USA.
March saw him making history as the first Indian to complete a half marathon in under 60 minutes, finishing third at the New York City Half Marathon with a time of 59:42. This achievement surpassed the previous national half marathon record of 1:00:30, set by Avinash Sable during the 2020 Delhi Half Marathon.
Gulveer Singh's progression in athletics reflects not only his individual commitment but also the intensive coaching and training provided by the Indian Army Sports Institute in Pune. Established to nurture talent within the armed forces, the institute plays a pivotal role in the development of professional athletes across various sports disciplines.
