Gujarat Authorities Seize ₹3,000 Crore Worth of Drugs at Sea
Gujarat's Anti-Terrorism Squad and Coast Guard intercept major drug shipment in Arabian Sea, arresting five suspects from Pakistan.

Gujarat's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Coast Guard have made significant strides in combating drug trafficking by seizing drugs valued at approximately ₹3,000 crore (£300 million) in the Arabian Sea. The operation saw the capture of 526 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine, a notable achievement in the ongoing battle against narcotics smuggling.

The combined effort took place following intelligence reports concerning a smuggling operation believed to involve multiple individuals from Pakistan. The authorities engaged in surveillance and subsequently intercepted the vessel involved in the operation. A total of five Pakistani nationals were detained during the mission.

The interception of such a large quantity of drugs is a substantial blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region. Officials have highlighted the growing challenge posed by smuggling in these waters, which serve as a common route for narcotics traffickers aiming to reach Indian shores.

The drugs seized have been linked to international drug cartels, raising concerns about the broader implications for public health and safety within India. Local authorities are now scrutinising the operations of these cartels further.

The Gujarat ATS and the Coast Guard have vowed to continue their collaboration in disrupting such illegal activities, stressing the importance of intelligence sharing and joint operations to improve maritime security.

This incident reflects the larger context of drug trafficking issues faced by various countries bordering the Arabian Sea, underscoring the need for coordinated global efforts in the fight against drug smuggling.

Officials have reiterated their commitment to tackle this issue head-on.

The last few years have seen various instances of drug seizures in the Arabian Sea, with the collaboration between federal and state agencies proving vital.

Continued operations in this area are essential for curbing the flow of illegal narcotics, as the authorities work on enhancing their resources and operational capabilities to respond to such threats effectively.
