Google Launches New Smart Speaker with Advanced AI Features
The Google Home Speaker, designed for Gemini AI, redefines smart home interactions and is priced at $99.99, available for preorder now.

After several years of minor updates, Google is introducing a new audio device aimed at transforming the smart speaker market. The Google Home Speaker, priced at $99.99, is set to launch with features powered by Gemini AI. This marks Google's first new stand-alone smart speaker since the Nest Audio's release in September 2020.

The Google Home Speaker centres on advanced AI interactions, allowing users to issue commands using natural language. Unlike previous iterations where precise phrasing was essential, Gemini enables more nuanced requests, such as 'turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp' or 'dim the kitchen lights, play some relaxing music, and set a timer for 20 minutes.' Users can also correct themselves mid-request, such as saying 'turn off the coffee maker … I mean, turn it on!' with the device processing these changes fluidly.

The speaker boasts 10 distinct voices for more expressive interactions, allowing users to engage in discussions beyond simple commands. Whether discussing everyday topics or delving into intricate queries, the device is designed to respond as if conversing with a knowledgeable companion.

Equipped with the “Continued Conversation” feature, the speaker maintains its listening capability for follow-up questions, eliminating the need to repeat the wake phrase, 'OK, Google.' The new design retains the familiar rounded appearance and 3D-knit textile while adding a ring light that displays the speaker's status—whether it's listening, processing, or responding to requests.

In terms of colour options, the speaker will be available in Jade and Berry for the United States, while internationally, it will be offered in additional shades, including Hazel and Porcelain.

However, not all features will be accessible without a subscription service. Google plans to introduce a Google Home Premium option priced at $10 per month or $100 annually, which will grant users access to enhanced AI capabilities. These include the Gemini Live feature for more fluid conversations and insights from Nest cameras regarding activity in the home. A six-month trial period for these premium features will be provided to early purchasers.

Despite the introduction of these advanced functionalities, consumers may question whether the subscription is justifiable, particularly as many capabilities remain accessible without it. Google aims to commit users to these advanced experiences by providing a taste of premium features before the subscription model takes effect.

The device is currently available for preorder and will begin shipping on June 25, 2026. Analysts will watch closely to see if Google can successfully invigorate the smart speaker market through innovative advancements in AI technology, positioning Gemini as a critical component in smart home ecosystems.
