Google's Android Chief Discusses iPhone Duo and Future of Foldables

Sameer Samat, the President of Android Ecosystem at Google, has expressed confidence in the continuing evolution of foldable smartphones as competition increases in the market. Speaking recently about Apple’s newly launched iPhone Duo, he noted that Android has been at the forefront of technological advancements in this area.

Samat’s comments come ahead of the iPhone Duo's pre-order date on October 16. He highlighted that the foldable phone segment is gaining recognition, stating, "It’s wonderful to see more people realizing that the foldable space is the place to be. Android is usually where you see the future first.”

Android devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which Samat himself uses, have pioneered this technology since the launch of the first Galaxy Fold in 2019. As he put it, the Fold 8 significantly enhances productivity for users, as they can seamlessly switch between the device and a laptop for their work tasks.

Market analysts have projected a potential shift in the foldable smartphone landscape with Apple's entry. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple is expected to secure around 25% of the market share in its first year, with expectations to rise to 40% by 2027. This shift is largely attributed to the ecosystem advantage Apple holds over its competitors.

Meanwhile, many Android applications have yet to fully optimise for the larger screens, as observed by Samat.
