Gold and Silver Prices Rise Amid Fed Rate Hike Speculations
Gold and silver see price rebounds despite expectations of US rate hikes. Investors react to inflation data and market pressures.

Gold and silver prices have exhibited a notable recovery, with gold rising by 1.2% to $4,366.69 per ounce and silver increasing by 1.4% to $64.43. This uptick has occurred as investors have entered the market to buy after recent declines. However, both metals remain poised for weekly losses, with gold down approximately 1.4% and silver experiencing a fall of 2.6% for the week so far.

Higher interest rates generally dampen the appeal of non-yielding assets like gold and silver, but the metals' roles as safe havens during uncertain economic times continue to support demand. In domestic markets, silver prices saw a sharp correction, dropping by Rs 10,000 to Rs 2,34,600 per kilogram due to recent selling pressures, despite global markets indicating a gain for silver at about 2% to $64.77 per ounce.

Furthermore, in New Delhi, 99.9% purity gold registered a decline of Rs 2,700, closing at Rs 1,55,900 per 10 grams. This drop followed selling pressure after a recent rally. Despite a global increase in gold prices of 1.15% to $4,366.58 per ounce, local prices suffered. Senior Analyst Saumil Gandhi from HDFC Securities noted that gold remains under pressure and is on track for a third consecutive weekly decline.

In Chennai, the end-of-week bullion rates indicated 22-carat gold priced at Rs 14,155 per gram and 18-carat gold at Rs 11,925 per gram. Though gold prices edged up during trading, they are still on track for a third consecutive weekly decline, largely due to growing expectations of a rate hike from the Federal Reserve.

Market observers are closely watching the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, expected soon, for signs that may clarify the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy direction. Analysts noted that stronger-than-anticipated inflation readings could bolster the case for multiple rate increases, putting further downward pressure on gold and silver prices.

The context of rising inflation has been reinforced by recent producer price data, indicating a potential uptick in underlying inflationary pressures in the US economy, especially influenced by escalating energy costs. Consequently, traders are now estimating a 70% likelihood of a Fed rate hike in the upcoming week.

Additionally, geopolitical developments, particularly those in the Middle East, are amplifying inflation concerns and have implications for gold prices. Reports indicate that Iran-aligned Houthis have gained control of Yemen’s port city of Mocha and are advancing down the Red Sea coast towards significant islands, raising geopolitical tensions in an already volatile region.

Wael Makarem, an analyst at Exness, has suggested that ongoing tensions in the Middle East could contribute to inflated concerns surrounding gold prices. Disturbances have already led to increased oil prices and further scrutiny of consumer price data, complicating the outlook for precious metals. While gold typically serves as an inflation hedge, the current market dynamics underscore the complex relationship between monetary policy and precious metal pricing, as rising interest rates often detract from the appeal of non-yielding assets.

The steady climb in Treasury yields and a stronger dollar are also factors impacting gold prices, making certified gold less affordable for holders of other currencies.

In the context of a highly fluctuating market, investors will be keenly awaiting the US CPI data release, which is anticipated to significantly influence future Federal Reserve policy decisions.
