Godox C100: Innovative Transparent Display Camera Priced at $29
The Godox C100 features a unique transparent display and is priced at just $29, marking a new approach in compact cameras.

Godox has recently unveiled the C100, a compact camera featuring a novel transparent display, retailing at approximately $29 (or ¥199). This product marks the company's initial foray into camera manufacturing, showcasing a unique design aimed at elevating user experience beyond that of traditional cameras.

The Godox C100 departs from conventional design by incorporating a transparent display instead of a standard LCD screen. This unique feature allows users to view their surroundings without any obstructions. Godox claims that the transparent panel boasts over 50% light transmittance, enabling photographers to capture images directly through it. To review photos, users will need to transfer files to another device via USB or remove the microSD card for access.

The camera’s functionality is streamlined yet effective. Unlike many of its counterparts, the C100 does not offer an image review screen. However, it enhances usability through active overlays that provide critical information such as exposure, framing guides, and battery status. The exposure settings utilise a centre-weighted light meter, ensuring that users can precisely control their shot without the need for extensive menus.

The C100 accommodates four aspect ratios—16:9, 4:3, 3:2, and 1:1—adapting frame lines displayed on the transparent screen. Measuring 104 x 72 x 19 millimetres and weighing just 65 grams, the device is lightweight and portable. It supports microSD cards with a storage capacity of up to 128 GB, catering to users who require ample space for photos and videos.

Charging the device is done via USB-C at 5V/1A, with Godox estimating over 1.5 hours of continuous video recording per charge. While detailed specifications regarding the sensor and image quality have not been disclosed, preliminary findings suggest that images capture between 320 and 570 kilobytes. This indicates that, although ideal for casual use, the camera may not cater to high-resolution demands.

In terms of usability, the camera employs restrictions typical of entry-level devices. ISO settings range from 100 to 800, available only in manual mode, while apertures can be adjusted between f/1.0 and f/64. The shutter speed varies from 1/8000 seconds to 1 second.

Despite being labelled as a simple tool, the Godox C100 has potential that extends beyond conventional uses. The company promotes its capability as a light meter, enabling additional functionality. If future iterations of the C100 include enhancements such as improved resolution and the capability to preview images directly on the transparent display, it could revolutionise compact camera design.

The Godox C100 is generating interest as it fits into the ongoing trend of innovative design in the camera sector, following other recent launches that have captured attention for their novelty. Users keen on exploring this new approach might find the C100 a fascinating addition to their photography toolkit. As Godox progresses with this line, spectators are eager to see what further advancements will materialise in subsequent models.
